We’ve covered the basics of your LinkedIn Profile.
Pat yourself on the back. You’ve made a lot of progress.
Just a couple more quick tips before you go:
1. Make sure you fill out the skills section. Refer to the job postings you were interested in and make sure you include skills that match your abilities and showed up in the job posting in this area.
This section, because of LinkedIn’s algorithms, helps bump you up if recruiters are searching. They might be looking for a particular skill. If you have it, you show up on their radar. It’s important not to leave sections blank on LinkedIn. Having a little information in each is better than having nothing.
You should aim to have 15-20 skills that include a mix of soft, general and technical skills. Don’t forget, you can include skills from volunteer activities too
2. Under your work history make sure you include current and past experience along with bullet points and accomplishments for each role. This will also be great prep work for your resume. You’ll already have all your work information in one place to refer too when you’re ready for it.
For education and training you have some options. If you don’t have a degree, you can include apprenticeships, relevant workshops and seminar, and certificates. If you are in the process of taking courses (online or in-person) you can include those as well.
3. A final note on LinkedIn, make sure you log in several times each week. You don’t have to spend more than 10 minutes on it once you’ve gotten it set up. You’ll want to make relevant post, interact with companies you are following, and see if you have messages.
I’ve also added a downloadable LinkedIn Checklist so you can make sure you haven’t left anything out.
