Staying on track with your goals is much easier said than done, and it’s easy to fall into the trap of excuses when life gets busy. However, neglecting progress can have serious consequences, leaving you feeling stuck or unfulfilled. If you’re ready to commit and keep moving forward, here are six practical strategies to help you stay on course and achieve your goals.
1. Write It Down
One of the simplest yet most effective ways to stay on track is to write your goals down. There’s something powerful about seeing your objectives in black and white. When you put your goals on paper, they become real and tangible, giving you a clearer path to follow. In When In Doubt, Delete It!, I mention how writing helps solidify commitment: “When you write it down, you’re not just dreaming—you’re making a declaration of intent”. By documenting your goals, you’re making an active promise to yourself, which increases your likelihood of success.
2. Set a Schedule
Goals without deadlines are just wishes. If you don’t set a clear timeline for when you want to accomplish something, it becomes easy to push it aside whenever life throws obstacles your way. Putting your goal on the calendar adds a layer of accountability. In Culture Secrets: Secrets Leaders Use to Build A V.A.L.U.E. Culture, I discuss the importance of structure: “A clear schedule ensures that even on the busiest of days, your priorities remain visible”. Give your goals specific deadlines and make them non-negotiable, ensuring they get the attention they deserve.
3. Break It Down
Big goals can often feel overwhelming, but breaking them down into smaller, manageable steps makes them far more achievable. Think of it like building a house: you don’t just throw up walls and a roof in one day—you start with a foundation and work your way up. The same is true for your goals. Break them into daily, weekly, or monthly chunks that allow you to make progress without feeling swamped. As I note in When In Doubt, Delete It!, “Success isn’t built in a day, but brick by brick, one step at a time”.
4. Get Accountable
Accountability is a powerful motivator. When you know you have to report your progress to someone else, you’re more likely to stay committed. Find an accountability partner—someone who shares your drive for achievement or simply a trusted friend who can help keep you on track. Regular check-ins help ensure that you’re making progress and give you the extra push you need when motivation starts to wane. In When In Doubt, Delete It!, I explain how accountability can make all the difference: “When someone is counting on you to show up, it’s harder to back out”.
5. Be Positive
Your mindset plays a huge role in how successfully you pursue your goals. Just like The Little Engine That Could, your attitude towards obstacles and challenges makes all the difference. Staying positive isn’t about ignoring difficulties—it’s about believing in your ability to overcome them. As I emphasize in When In Doubt, Delete It!, “Your mindset sets the tone for your journey. If you approach each task with positivity, you’re halfway there already”. Use affirmations, surround yourself with supportive people, and keep reminding yourself that you can achieve what you set out to do.
6. Treat Yourself
Celebrating your progress is just as important as working towards the finish line. When you hit a milestone, reward yourself—it keeps you motivated and acknowledges the hard work you’ve put in. Whether it’s a small treat or something bigger like a vacation, plan something special for yourself as a reward. As I note in Culture Secrets, “Celebration isn’t just about the final victory—it’s about recognizing the wins along the way”. Treating yourself gives you something to look forward to and reinforces the positive momentum you’ve created.
Staying on track with your goals doesn’t have to be a monumental task. By writing them down, setting a schedule, breaking them into smaller steps, finding accountability, keeping a positive mindset, and rewarding yourself along the way, you’ll be able to stay focused and continue moving toward success.
