Core Values Make A Difference In Company Culture

In today’s business world, it’s not just the big corporations that are making an impact. Small companies and start-ups can also have a big influence on their customers, their employees, and their communities. I wanted to highlight some companies you may not be familiar with and take a look at how their strong core values show up in their culture and how that is making a difference.

Bots for That

I had the privilege of chatting with Daniel Lawrence, co-founder of Bots For That, a London based tech company that helps companies become more productive, more efficient, and operate more optimally, by improving their processes and how they worked. Lawrence said when something robotic process automation came up, he and his business partner Christian, thought it could be a bit of a game changer, because it meant you no longer had to change any of your actual technology systems. When a businesses automates these processes, they can eliminate loads of manual work. Then came bots. What’s a bot? According to Lawrence imagine a prebuilt bot activity that takes your information out of your Salesforce system and puts it in another system and creates an invoice in your accounting system. Bots For That had just started operating and gaining traction in 2017 when the pandemic lockdown happened.

“We started getting really busy suddenly, because everyone’s way of working suddenly changed through force,” Lawrence said. “People couldn’t go to colleges for their classes. They had to dial in on a zoom call. And no one’s systems were set up to handle life and work in that way. We grew quite a lot through lockdown. And it was a in some ways, a springboard for us to accelerate our growth and what we were doing and to evolve our own business strategy. Ever since then, we’ve been continuing to grow and bootstrap our business.”

Lawrence explained it takes a special type of employee to work for a start-up and being clear on the company values and culture is one of the things that helped him and his partner make sure they were employing the right people.

“Our culture and our values are almost synonymous,” Lawrence said. “But we pin them together. Our acronym for our value based system is recipe. There’s a link for that because what we build now is bot recipes. We came up with an acronym actually tied to that to give us a little bit of consistency, but have fun, really. Our value acronym is recipe, which is respect, excellence, customer integrity, performance, and execution. So when we first speak to a potential job candidate we go through this is what it is so they know what we value above all else.”

Patagonia

Patagonia is a small company that produces outdoor clothing and gear. Their core values include “build the best product,” “cause no unnecessary harm,” and “use business to protect nature.” These values are evident in the way they design and produce their products, as well as in their activism and advocacy work.

Patagonia’s commitment to their core values has led to impressive growth and recognition. They have become a leader in sustainable and ethical business practices and have received numerous awards for their environmental and social responsibility.

Warby Parker

Warby Parker is a small company that produces eyewear. Their core values include “collaboration,” “innovation,” and “social responsibility.” These values are evident in the way they design and produce their products, as well as in their social impact initiatives.

Warby Parker’s commitment to their core values has led to impressive growth and recognition. They have become a leader in socially responsible business practices and have received numerous awards for their innovation and impact.

No matter the size of your company, you can make a big impact when they develop strong core values and commit to them. These companies demonstrate that success is not just about size, but about having a clear purpose, a commitment to excellence, and a desire to make a positive impact on the world. By prioritizing their core values, these companies have not only achieved success, but they have also created a lasting legacy that inspires others to follow their lead.
