10 Crazy, But Real, Excuses People Actually Used to Miss Work

The dog ate my shoe and I couldn’t come to work. What’s your excuse?

Reader’s Digest put together a list of 60 of the most ridiculous excuses people actually used to get out of work. (Read the full list here.)

Here are my personal top 10 favorites:

  1. My llama wouldn’t stop barfing.
  2. I ate a can of cat food instead of tuna and now I’m deathly ill. (Really should have screened his application a little better, don’t you think?)
  3. I’m stuck in the blood pressure machine at the grocery store.
  4. The fortune teller told me not to leave the house or else I’d have a brain hemorrhage.
  5. I can’t come to work because I accidentally got on a plane.
  6. I got “lucky” last night and don’t know where I am this morning.
  7. I must attend the funeral of my wife’s cousin’s pet because I’m the uncle and pallbearer.
  8. My false teeth flew out of the car window while I was driving down the highway.
  9. My uniform caught on fire after I put it in the microwave to dry it.

And my favorite of all…..

  1. I woke up in a good mood and didn’t want to ruin it!

Are you constantly coming up with reasons not to go to work? Maybe there’s more to the problem than you didn’t get enough sleep the night before. But you aren’t alone. According to a Gallup poll, 85% of workers worldwide admit to hating their jobs.

That number is crazy! Think about it, from 6AM until 6PM you are either getting ready for work, headed to work, at work, or headed home from work. How sad is it that you spend over half of your day dreading going to, being at, or doing what earns you a paycheck.

What if you had a job you looked forward to showing up for? When you think about it, we spend over a third of our life at work. In my book, When In Doubt, Delete It!,  I talk about ways to redefine how you think about success and tips you can implement at work to make it a better experience. If you’re tired of making up excuses for reasons you can’t show up at your office, check out more tips here:
